Marquette Mountain Resort Hosting 25th Annual Hornbogen Memorial Ski Race

For the 25th consecutive year, Marquette Mountain Resort will host the annual Hornbogen Memorial Ski Race – a four-event competition open to skiers of all ages and ski levels – on March 4 to help raise funds for the Francine Malindzak Scholarship Fund and the Marquette Mountain Racing Team.

Registration is now open and spectators are also welcome to watch scores of skiers compete for medals and the coveted Golden Chair.

“The Hornbogen is always a delight as it brings together Midwest skiers of all ages who want to race for the gold or just participate in this worthwhile event,” said Kaet Johnson, General Manager of Marquette Mountain Resort. “Of course, there’s also the bragging rights for the two overall winners to have their names on the Golden Chair on Rocket Lift.”

First-, second- and third-place medals are awarded to the male and female in each age category. The overall male and female winners are recognized with their name on the Golden Chair.

The daylong event begins at 9 a.m. with each skier participating in four races: downhill, slalom, giant slalom and super-giant slalom. According to Johnson, the Hornbogen Memorial is the only race in the Midwest to include those four skiing disciplines. It’s also one of the few, if not only, downhill races scheduled in the Midwest due to unfavorable weather affecting ski conditions.

“This season, it’s the only downhill event available in the Midwest,” Johnson said. “We’re expecting to get skiers from throughout Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois to visit Marquette Mountain Resort and compete in the Hornbogen. The multi-million dollar investment we made in snowmaking infrastructure during the offseason is providing exceptional snow coverage and quality. We have a great racing heritage at Marquette Mountain Resort. We’re proud to keep that tradition going with race events like the Hornbogen and others, and we look forward to welcoming skiers all season.”
